The Early Child Development Council was formed in 1971 to offer parents information and support on early child development and education.  In 1972, the Council organized a corporation to run a parent cooperative nursery school based on the belief that the first five years are a crucial period of development.  The nursery school was named "Early Child Development Council of Medfield, Inc." (ECDC).  In 1973, it declared itself a nondiscriminatory, non-profit corporation.  In 1977 the corporation opened a second school in Sherborn.  In 1988, ECDC Medfield moved to Walpole and the name of the corporation was changed to ECDC Nursery School, Inc.  Through the 1992-1993 school year one corporation operated the two schools.  As of July 1, 1993 each school is a separate legal entity with no ties to the other school.

ECDC now stands for the "Early Childhood Development Center".  The school's legal name is ECDC Nursery School of Walpole, Inc.  It was incorporated in Massachusetts on April 15, 1993 and commenced operation with the Summer Program on June 28, 1993.
